What is an Addiction Assessment?

An addiction assessment is a structured evaluation in which a licensed addiction treatment counselor or mental health counselor assesses an individual to determine the severity of their addiction. The clinical team member typically uses a standardized framework or questionnaire to determine the severity of substance use.

Assessments also typically include a set of recommended next steps, whether that be seeking treatment or other resources. By determining the severity of your addiction, an evaluation can help you better understand what kind of treatment program may best suit your recovery needs.

What to Expect in an Addiction Assessment in Washington

At Rebuilt Treatment and Recovery, individuals seeking an assessment come to our comfortable treatment center in Spokane. Once there, they’ll sit down with one of our knowledgeable addiction specialists for a one-on-one discussion about  their substance use history. For a more complete understanding of each individual’s experiences with substance abuse, our team may also ask questions about mental health and physical health. These questions may help determine if an individual is dealing with a mental health disorder or other co-occurring condition alongside addiction. This is important information to factor into any treatment plan moving forward in order to ensure treatment fully addresses the needs of the individual.

Once this assessment is complete, we will recommend next steps for individuals seeking addiction recovery. This can look like providing resources in the community or providing details on what level of care may be most appropriate for treatment needs. Individuals leave the assessment equipped with a clearer understanding of how they might proceed in their journey to sobriety. By providing a clear starting point and identifying next steps, we empower individuals to embark on the path to lasting recovery with clarity and guidance.

Rebuilt Treatment and Recovery offers addiction assessments on a voluntary basis as well as assists with any court-ordered assessments, including DUI assessments. Reach out to our team for more details on how to schedule a DUI assessment.

What Happens After an Addiction Assessment?

The next step after completing an addiction assessment will depend on what the licensed addiction professionals recommend based on your specific needs. For some, this may be to enter an addiction treatment program. There are many different types of addiction treatment varying in intensity and time commitment. The most appropriate level of care for you depends on the severity of your addiction, as well as factors such as having stable housing, a supportive living environment, physical and mental health, and external obligations.

Individuals embarking on their recovery journey may need to first undergo detox before entering a treatment program. This involves stopping substance use, which can result in withdrawal symptoms that may require medical supervision to ensure safety. Once an individual has gone through detox, they can proceed with an addiction treatment program.

Individuals with a severe addiction may benefit from inpatient addiction treatment, which features round-the-clock support in a residential treatment facility. Rebuilt does not currently offer detox or inpatient services, but we can connect individuals with trusted treatment providers in the local area.

Other individuals may benefit most from outpatient addiction treatment. At Rebuilt, we offer three levels of outpatient care.

  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP): This is the highest level of outpatient addiction treatment. Clients meet four days a week for six hours at a time at our treatment center to participate in therapeutic treatment sessions.
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP): Often considered a bridge between PHP and traditional outpatient care, an IOP meets three days a week for three hours at a time. In these sessions, clients build personalized coping skills to help them manage triggers and maintain sobriety long-term.
  • Outpatient treatment: Individuals meet on a weekly basis to participate in therapy or counseling. This level of care is designed to help clients maintain the recovery skills they have built in previous programs, or to assist individuals dealing with a less severe addiction
